First Battle of Bull Run, (First Manassas), July 21, 1861. Union Gen. Burnsides Brigade facing Confederate General Evans on Matthews Hill, at 11:00 AM. Evans small force of 900 men slowed Burnsides advance on the Confederate flank, allowing time for reinforcement from two other Confederate brigades under Brig. Gen. Barnard Bee and Col. Francis S. Bartow. Eventually, Evans fell back to nearby Henry Hill, where the battle continued to a Confederate victory
