First Battle of Bull Run, (First Manassas), July 21, 1861. Stampede of Union troops from the Battle of Bull Run at 5:30 PM, after 10 hours of fighting. In full retreat, the Union soldiers were pursued at different points by the Black Horse Cavalry of Virginia. Soldiers threw away their guns and fought for places on the baggage wagons. Congressmen in light buggies were overturned in the rush
