The first shots of the US Civil War were fired
The first shots of the US Civil War were fired from Morris Island battery by cadets from the Citadel on Jan. 19, 1861. They caused minor damage to a civilian steamer, Star of the West, which was hired by the Federal government resupply the Union garrison at Fort Sumter. The ship retreated, abandoning its immediate mission, but returned in April to transport the Fort Sumter garrison to New York City. An African American man handled the cannonballs
