The floundering British steam ship President, as last seen by from the packet ship Orpheus, by Captain Cole. She was caught in a terrific gale on March 12, 1841, between Nantucket Shoals and Georges Bank. Never seen again, she was presumed sunk with 136 passengers and crew along with an extensive cargo. It was a great disaster, with the deathwatch stretching out for months
