THE FOREST IN WINTER AT SUNSET, by Theodore Rousseau, 1846-67, French painting, oil on canvas. This monumental forest sunset scene was begun in 1846 and remained unfinished in 1867 when the artist died. Rousseau sought to paint sunset he had seen in Fontainebleau forest, in Dec. 1845 with lacework of dark bare branches, against the red and orange of the sky, and stooped peasants in the center foreground. Rousseau was a leader of the Barbizon School of Romantic realist painters (BSLOC_2017_9_104)
