FORT LARAMIE, watercolor painting made ca. 1858-60 by Alfred Jacob Miller, from field-sketches made during his 1837 expedition to western Wyoming. These early sketches were made before the fort was torn down in 1840. Fort Laramie was established as a private fur trading post in1834, on an old north-south Indian trail near the Laramie Mountains in what is now southeast Wyoming. Miller made the only known eyewitness depictions of the exterior of the first Fort Laramie
