Fort Stevens was on the north line of the US Civil War defenses of Washington, DC. It bore the brunt of Jubal Earlys attack with an army of 10, 000 on July 12, 1864. In 1865 it was garrisoned by a detachment of Company K, 3d Massachusetts Heavy Artillery
