Fort Union Trading Post was built on the Missouri
Fort Union Trading Post was built on the Missouri River by John Jacob Astors American Fur Company in 1828 near the present-day border of Montana and North Dakota. Indians established camps near the fort. Hand-colored aquatint etching of 1840 by Swiss-French artist Karl Bodmer, who accompanied German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied on his Missouri River expedition, 1833-1834
