Frances Hook enlisted and fought with at least four Union Illinois Regiments during the US Civil War. At first, the 18 year old orphan did not want to be separated from her old brother. When he was killed at Shiloh, she was discovered and discharged after being wounded at Fredericktown, Missouri. During her 4th enlistment, she was taken prisoner in summer 1863. When Pres. Jefferson Davis heard her story, he offered her a Confederate Commission, which she refused
