Freedmans Barracks, Alexandria, Virginia, 18643-65. Alexandria attracted refugee African Americans during the Civil War. It was in the vicinity of fortification construction and transport on the Potomac River. The well built barracks housed the contrabands in more security than many of 1000 refugee camps for ex-slaves throughout the various war zones.
