The French Huguenots, led by Rene de Laudonniere
The French Huguenots, led by Rene de Laudonniere, build a triangular fort on the River May, to guard their anticipated colony French colony of Fort Caroline in 1564. It was located in present-day Jacksonville, Florida. In 1564 the settlement was destroyed by the Spanish army under Pedro Menendez de Aviles, along with most of its garrison and colonists, a total of over 500 people.
