French and Indian War. General Louis-Joseph Montcalm trying to stop Native Americans from attacking British soldiers and civilians as they leave Fort William McHenry, in the aftermath of the French Siege on Lake George, August 8, 1757. Montcalm allowed the defeated British and their camp followers to withdraw, under French escort, to Fort Edward. 2, 000 Huron allies of the French, would not be restrained from their customary practice of killing prisoners and taking scalps as trophies. An estimated 60 to 185 prisoners were killed
