A gathering of militias, in Philadelphia, c. 1811-13. First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry was the oldest active volunteer mounted military unit in the United States at the beginning of the War of 1812. They were activated as mounted sentry to observe British movements during the invasion of Maryland in Aug. 1814. At far left are soldier in frontier style uniforms with fringe bands
