General Abner Doubleday, officer of the Federal
General Abner Doubleday, officer of the Federal Army during the US Civil War, 1861-65. A Veteran of the Mexican War, he fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. At Gettysburg, he lead 9, 500 Union soldiers against 16, 000 Confederates for five hours before men retreating with over 40% casualties
