General Luigi Cadorna was Italy's Chief of Staff from August 1914 until the Italian army's defeat at Caporetto in October 1917. He blamed his soldiers for defeats, and ordered the execution of over 750 men during his command. Cadorna reintroduced the Roman practice of decimation - the killing of every tenth man in units which failed to perform in battle
