General Robert Nivelle replaced Joseph Joffre as French Commander-in-Chief in 1916. Nivelle promised politicians a fast victory (48 hours) by using artillery on an unprecedented scale. The Nivelle Offensive failed and contributed to the widespread mutiny in the French Army in 1917
