General Thomas Gage, by John Singleton Copley, 1768, Anglo American painting, oil on canvas. Following the French and Indian War, Gage was commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America. In 1774 he was made the military governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay, and arrived with an army to enforce the Intolerable Acts. In Britain they were called the Coercive Acts
