George Armstrong Custer, in Brady Studio portrait, 1865, wearing his uniform as a Brevet Major General of the US Volunteers. In 1864, Custer served in the Overland Campaign commanded by Gen. Phillip Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley in the US Civil War. He defeated the forces of Confederate General Jubal Early at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Oct. 19, 1864
