George Clymer, was a Patriot politician activist against the Stamp Act of 1765. Prior to the outbreak of fighting in 1775, he was a member of the Philadelphia Committee of Safety. He signed the Declaration of Independence, and was elected to the Continental Congress 1776"77, during the American Revolution. He was a delegate to Constitutional Convention in 1787 and elected to the first U.S. Congress in 1789. Engraving by John Sartain after a portrait by Benjamin Trott
