George Washington, by Adolph Wertmuller, American painting, 1795. The Swedish born Wertmuller established himself as a French trained painter in Paris before he traveled to the US from 1794-96, where he painted five Washington portraits. Returning to the Philadelphia in 1800, he married and lived in Delaware until his death in 1811
