This Washington portrait is based on Stuarts 1796 sitting with the President, when he created the Athenaeum Portrait, which hung in the Boston Athenaeum after Stuarts death in 1828. This 1803 work is one of an estimated 70 painting variations Stuart created from the one original. The image on the US $1 bill is also derived from the Athenaeum Portrait
