George Washington, the Lansdowne Portrait, by Gilbert Stuart, 1796, American painting, oil on canvas. The Lansdowne portrait is a life-size depiction of 64-year-old Washington in the last year of his Presidency. Stuart painted three copies of the Lansdowne portrait, and five other portraits based on it. The face and head are painted in the style of Gilberts 1796 Atheneum Portrait. The portrait was commissioned by the Marquis of Lansdowne, an English supporter of American independence
