George Washington, by William Winstanley, 1803. American painting, oil on canvas. Winstanley was an English-born landscape artist who emigrated to the US in the 1790s. He settled in Philadelphia, where George Washington purchased four of his landscapes, three of which are now at Mt. Vernon. In the US, he also painted portraits, such as this one of Washington, before he returned to England around 1804-06
