Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1909. She began serious work on sculpture after her 1896 marriage, winning commissions and artistic recognition. Her Whitney Studio Gallery, opened in 1908, evolved into the Whitney Museum, which she founded in 1931, with her collection of nearly 700 modern art works
