Government begins probe of Pierre DuPonts tax

Government begins probe of Pierre DuPonts tax returns. The noted financier, (left) and one of his aids, Gerald Montaigne, appeared at the initial hearing in New York City, May 3, 1937. The government is also investigating John J. Raskob. The Bureau of the Internal Revenue Service contends that through transactions involving more than $27, 000, 000, DuPont and Raskob were enabled to report taxable income considerably under what they should have declared. The businesses had committed disreputable tax avoidance rather than illegal tax evasions and were embittered against the New Deal for what they perceived as persecution. - (CSU_2015_5_51)
