Group portrait of the first Chinese foreign mission to travel to the West. The first visited in San Francisco, New York, and Washington DC in 1868. The Chinese government appointed American Ambassador, Anson Burlingame (standing center), to head their diplomatic mission to the United States and the principal European nations. The mission included two Chinese ministers, six students from Peking (Beijing), an English and a French secretary, John McLeavy Brown and Ferdinand Auguste Emile Deschamps, respectively. The names of the Chinese are written under their portraits
