Hannah Richards of Athens, Tennessee, in a 1870 photograph. Born a slave around 1800, she was freed in 1826, according to the will of her owner, Gabriel Richards. In 1855, she was abducted to a plantation in Alabama, but escaped, and returned to Tennessee. This photo was owned by her grandson, William Henry Richards, who became a lawyer and professor at Howard University
