Harriet Tubman's raid in Combahee, SC, June 2, 1863 during the Civil War. Tubman accompanied African American soldiers on the raid she helped to plan. It was executed by the Second South Carolina Volunteers (Colored) and Third Rhode Island Battery gunboats. The raiders ascended the Combahee River for about 25 miles, destroyed a pontoon bridge, large amount of cotton, rice, and other property, and brought away seven hundred and twenty-seven slaves. Many of the soldiers on the raid previously escaped from this area and were intent upon liberating those left behind. Wood engraving from Harpers Weekly
