Harriett Tubman, depicted as a scout and spy with the Union Army during the Civil War. At Port Royal, a South Carolina Island occupied by the Union forces, she interviewed newly liberated slaves to gather intelligence about Confederate operations. She also scouted into Confederate territory, and nursed wounded soldiers. The engraving appeared in Sarah Bradfords book, SCENES IN THE LIFE OF HARRIET TUBMAN, 1869
