The Haymarket Riot, May 4, 1886, Chicago. Beginning as a strike rally, an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb that killed eight police and several civilians. The image depicts Methodist pastor Samuel Fielden speaking, the bomb exploding, as the riot begins. The image depicts separate actions that did not happen at the same time. On May 1, 1886, many labor unions began striking for an 8-hour workday. At the Hay Market, striking workers rallied peacefully until the bomb was thrown into an advancing police formation after the strikers were ordered to disperse. 1 policeman was killed immediately, 6 others were mortally wounded, and 4 workers also died
