Heman Sweatt with his wife, Constantine, on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court. Sweatt v. Painter lawsuit was first filed in 1947, when Sweatt was denied admission to The University of Texas School of Law on the basis of race. In June 1950, Supreme Court decided that students were not offered an equal quality law education in the state of Texas, and as a result UT would have to admit qualified black applicants.
