Senator Henry Clay was the 1832 Presidential Nominee of the Democratic Republican Party, but lost decisively to popular Democrat incumbent, Andrew Jackson. Clays Democratic-Republican lost its constituently to the Jackson Democrats and was morphing into the Whig Party. The term Whig originated from a speech Clay delivered in 1834, in which he compared opponents of Jackson to the Whigs, a British political party opposed to absolute monarchy
