Henry Laurens, was the President of the Continental Congress from November 1, 1777 to December 9, 1778. This elaborate portrait by John Singleton Copley was painted of Laurens in the role of President of Congress. Laurens was a very wealthy man from his partnership in the largest slave-trading house in North America, which sold more than 8, 000 enslaved Africans. Portrait by John Singleton Copley, 1782
