Henry Laurens was a prominent politician during the American Revolution. As a diplomat, he negotiated Dutch support for the Americans in 1780. Later that year, his ship was intercepted and when searched, the British discovered the draft of a US-Dutch treaty. Laurens was tried for treason in London and imprisoned until he was exchanged for Gen. Charles Cornwallis. Britain also declared war on the Dutch Republic
