Herman Haupt graduated from West Point in 1835 and quickly resigned his commission to begin a 25 year career in railroad engineering, rising to Pennsylvania Railroads general superintendent and chief engineer. He devised methods of quick repair for the Unions frequently sabotaged railroads, keeping armies and supplies moving over long distances, during the US Civil War
