The Hongs of Canton, by an unknown artist, ca. 1847-1856. A reverse-glass export painting of the Thirteen Factories c.?1805, displaying the flags of Denmark, the United States, Britain, and the Netherlands. The factories were not manufacturers, but offices, trading posts, and warehouses of foreign merchants. They were licensed to trade and conform to limits set by the Chinese government
