Hypnotism, ca. 1845, by John Adams Whipple, was a Boston scientist-photographer best known for his photographs of the moons surface. In this photo a doctor stands behind four seated subjects, with their eyes closed, each with their hands clasped. The doctor places his palm on the head of the male sitter. The photograph demonstrates the procedural method and medical theory of magnetic sleep. It held that a magnetic fluid emanated from the doctor to a patient, and through it, suggestions could be made directly into the subjects mind
