AN IDYLL OF THE DEEP SOUTH, by Aaron Douglas, 1934, African American painting, oil on canvas. The star on left was thought to be the North star, which guided escaping slaves. In 1971, the artist revealed it was his version of the red star of Communism to illustrate the hope that equality be attained through political change. The four-panel series, ASPECTS OF NEGRO LIFE, was painted under the Public Works of Art Project (PWAP), for the New York Public Librarys 135th Street branch, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture (BSLOC_2017_20_156)
