This image is one of the earliest depictions of African slavery in the New World. Spanish soldiers punish slaves who failed to meet their quota of gold and silver ore from the mines in the left background. In the foreground a flogged slave has pitch poured on his wounds. Another slave is buried up to his neck. In the background slaves are engaged in mining. This 1595 engraving published by Theodor de Bry is based on an image in Girolamo Benzonis, Historia del Mondo Nuovo, Venice, 1565
