Inclined Plane F, of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Co. was photographed by Thomas H. Johnson around 1860. An inclined plane served the same function as a water lock, which raised and lowered canal boats, to adjust to the changing elevation of the canal. The boats were secured in an underwater containment structure, then they were lifted or lowered on the inclined plane track
