Indians inside the lodge of a Mandan Chief, 1833-34. The Mandan established permanent villages with large, round, earth lodges, some 40 feet (12 m) in diameter, surrounding a central plaza. They practiced agriculture, producing surplus corn which they traded with other Indians for buffalo meat and other items. Note the horses on left. Hand-colored aquatint etching of 1840 by Swiss-French artist Karl Bodmer, who accompanied German explorer Prince Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied on his Missouri River expedition, 1833-1834
