The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, 1794. He was taken into slavery as a child, from southeastern Nigeria, bound for the Anglo-Caribbean, British West Indies. He recounts that his most significant owner was as Royal Navy officer who renamed him Gustav Vassa, after a 16th-century Swedish nobleman. Eventually, he purchased his freedom in 1766, continued his life as a seaman until he became involved with the British abolition movement in the 1780s
