Italian immigrant rag-picker sits with her baby in a small run-down tenement room. Collecting salvage items to sell was work adopted by many poor urban immigrants. Rag pickers collected recyclable materials including cloth, paper, bones, metal and glass. Fabric and paper required cleaning before they could be sold for 2 cents a pound. Bones were sold for 30 cents a bushel. Metal and glass were sold to junk dealers
