Jack McGrath was the fastest qualifier, for the 1955 Indianapolis 500. During the race on May 30, 1955 his engine failed on lap 54. Months later, on Nov. 6, 1955 he died in a race on the one-mile dirt oval at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix. (CSU_2015_11_1681)
