James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States
James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States, serving from 1857-1861. Jacob Eichholtz painted this oil on canvas portrait in 1834, on his return as 5th US Minister to Russia. In his long political career, he represented Pennsylvania in the House of Representatives from 1814 to 1831; the Senate in 1834-1845, and was James Polk's Secretary of State. As ambassador to Britain from 1853 to 1856, his removal from sectional conflict over slavery, made him a broadly acceptable presidential candidate (BSIC_2020_12_48)
