James Chenowith Lamon built the first permanent cabin in the Yosemite Valley in 1861 and wintered over in 1862-63 and 1863-64. He demonstrated the possibility of living through a Yosemite winter. He farmed in the valley, planted orchards, berries, vegetables and harvested hay to feed his horses. Lamon sold his fruits and vegetables to early tourists and hotel keepers
