James Chesnut was Senator from South Carolina
James Chesnut was Senator from South Carolina in the 35th and 36th Congresses, until is resignation in Nov. 1861. He then served in the Confederate army, and as an aide-de-camp to General P.G.T. Beauregard, fired the first artillery shell at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. His wife, Mary Boykin Miller Chesnut, kept a diary of the US Civil War from a southern perspective
