James Mason and John Slidell, landing at Fort
James Mason and John Slidell, landing at Fort Lafayette, New York Harbor, to be briefly imprisoned. The Confederate diplomats, were forcibly removed from the British ship RMS Trent on Nov. 8, 1861 by US Captain Charles Wilkes. With British sovereignty violated, a diplomatic crisis followed, to be resolved by President Lincolns release of the men on Dec. 26, 1861
