James Otis was early involved in events leading to the American Revolution in the 1760s. Otis gave an incendiary five-hour oration in the Massachusetts State House in February 1761, disputing the legality of the ~general writs of assistance, that allowed British colonial revenue officers to enter any premises, with no advance notice, or probable cause, to search for smuggled goods. He subsequently was elected to the Provincial Assembly, authored political pamphlets, and was a leader of the Stamp Act Congress, 1865
