James Weldon Johnson, ca. 1920, in studio portrait by African American photographer, James Calvin Patton. Johnson, a lawyer, served as executive secretary of the NAACP from 1920-1930. His other profession was in literature, as a poet, lyricist, novelist, editor, critic, and educator. His 1900 poem, Lift Every Voice and Sing, was designated the Negro national anthem by the NAACP in 1919 (BSIC_2020_7_8)
